Cross-reactive carbohydrates (CCDs) in allergy diagnosis

Most allergens from plant and insects contain glycoproteins with cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs). Antibodies directed against CCDs cross-react with all proteins containing this epitope. About 25% of patients have anti-CCD IgE resulting in a vast number of positive sIgE results for allergens. As anti-CCD IgE is so kind as not to elicit allergic symptoms, such results are FALSE POSITIVES.
